3D finite element modelling of drilling: The effect of modelling method

A comprehensive benchmarking study has been carried out to determine the influence of mesh formulation and chip separation methods on reliability accuracy finite element modelling large diameter drilling operations. The Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian updated-Lagrangian (with deletion) formulations available in ABAQUS/Explicit, together with re-meshing) DEFORM 3D are compared by simulating through-coolant AISI 1045. Johnson–Cook damage model was implemented a sub-routine ensure consistent is across formulations. Experimentally measured thrust force, torque, thickness values were used compare models performance assess predictions. dynamic re-meshing found be best performing methodology concerning predictions, whilst significantly under-predicted force torque. Due numerical instabilities computational cost, deletion method not recommended drilling.
